Early rock Scenario of Nepal



With the arrival of hippies in Kathmandu early in 70s and 80s, Nepal started with the influence of the western music. Most of the hippies that arrive in Kathmandu played music with the instrument, especially the guitar they brought with them together and used to play Rock and roll music in a place called Jhochhen, which they later called as Freak Street.

Freak Street became notorious for marijuana and narcotics which attracted many a psychedelic rock and rollers during that period of time. Most of the music lovers from Kathmandu used to find this place as rock and roll scene and used to get lessons of music from the outsiders and found the key in playing the western music slowly from those time, which now at the present many music lovers have been able to get knowledge of the western music and are much more improvized in the techniques in many genres of music, once started with rock and roll scene.

Rock and Roll song of Nepal first recorded is “Diunlaa” by Kumar Basnet.
                                                              

Mukti Shakya, Jyoti Ghimire, Dev Rana , Om Bikram Vista, Pemba Lepcha and various other singers and bands emerged from the Freak Street in the field of Rock music during the Hippie Era that was in Kathmandu, Nepal.
